About

Why Maine Coons Are One of the World’s Most Loved Cat Breeds

The Maine Coon is one of the largest and most impressive domesticated cat breeds in the world. Originally developed in the northeastern United States, this remarkable breed is admired for its size, intelligence, affectionate nature, and striking appearance. The breed is also known for its naturally occurring polydactyl variation, a unique trait that gives some Maine Coons extra toes and the distinctive “mitten paws” that many enthusiasts admire.

Male Maine Coons typically weigh between 17 and 25 pounds, while females generally range from 12 to 18 pounds. Unlike many other breeds, Maine Coons mature slowly and may not reach their full size until they are three to five years of age.

Often referred to as the “gentle giants” of the cat world, Maine Coons are known for their friendly personalities, playful nature, and strong bonds with their families. They are highly intelligent, curious, and adaptable, making them excellent companions for individuals, couples, and families with children.

Their distinctive appearance includes a muscular build, tufted ears, large paws, expressive eyes, and a magnificent flowing coat. Combined with their affectionate temperament, impressive size, and unique polydactyl heritage, these qualities have helped make the Maine Coon one of the most beloved cat breeds in the world.

What is your reservation process to adopt a Maine Coon cat?

Our reservation process is designed to ensure that every kitten is matched with the right family.

Families interested in adopting a kitten are invited to contact us to discuss availability, upcoming litters, and their preferences. Once a suitable kitten becomes available, a $300 reservation deposit is required to secure the reservation.

Throughout the process, we provide updates, photos, and information to help families prepare for their kitten’s arrival. Because we focus on quality rather than quantity, availability can be limited and some families may reserve a kitten from a future litter.

Can you ship a Maine Coon kitten anywhere in Canada?

Yes. We regularly work with families across Canada and can arrange safe transportation for our kittens to most major cities and provinces.

We carefully coordinate travel plans to ensure each kitten arrives safely and comfortably. Whether you are located in Ontario, British Columbia, Alberta, Nova Scotia, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, or elsewhere in Canada, we are happy to discuss the transportation options available for your location.

Can you ship a Maine Coon Kitten to the United States?

Yes. We are able to work with families throughout the United States and can assist with the requirements necessary for cross-border travel.

Every kitten receives the appropriate veterinary documentation required for travel. Because import regulations can change, we are happy to discuss the current requirements and transportation options with prospective families located in the United States.

Are Maine Coons high maintenance?

Maine Coons are considered relatively low-maintenance for a long-haired breed. Their silky coat is less prone to matting than many other long-haired cats, but regular brushing is still recommended to keep their coat healthy and reduce shedding.

In addition to grooming, Maine Coons benefit from regular play, social interaction, and a balanced diet to support their large size and muscular build. With routine care and attention, most families find Maine Coons easy to live with and exceptionally rewarding companions.

Are your rates negotiable?

No. Our pricing reflects the significant time, care, and resources invested into every kitten we raise.

Our kittens are bred from carefully selected bloodlines and are raised in a family environment with extensive socialization and veterinary care. Each kitten goes home with vaccinations, deworming, registration, a health guarantee, and ongoing support. Our focus has always been on producing healthy, well-socialized Maine Coons rather than operating a high-volume breeding program.

Why Are Maine Coons So Expensive?

The cost of a Maine Coon kitten reflects the extensive work required to responsibly breed and raise healthy, well-socialized cats. Responsible breeders invest in quality breeding cats, health testing, veterinary care, proper nutrition, registration fees, vaccinations, and daily socialization.

At Maine Coon Family, our focus is on quality rather than quantity. We maintain a limited breeding program and devote significant time and attention to every kitten we raise, helping ensure they are healthy, confident, and well prepared for life with their new family.

How Big Do Maine Coons Get?

Maine Coons are one of the largest domesticated cat breeds in the world. Adult males commonly weigh between 17 and 25 pounds, while females typically range from 12 to 18 pounds.

Unlike many breeds, Maine Coons mature slowly and may continue growing until they are three to five years old. Their large size, muscular build, and impressive appearance are among the many reasons they are so popular with cat lovers around the world.

Are Maine Coons Good With Children and Other Pets?

Yes. Maine Coons are widely known for their gentle, friendly, and adaptable temperament. They often form strong bonds with children and generally integrate well into households with other cats and cat-friendly dogs.

Their patient nature and playful personality make them excellent family companions. As with any pet introduction, proper supervision and gradual introductions are important, but Maine Coons are often considered one of the most family-friendly cat breeds available.

What Is a Polydactyl Maine Coon?

A polydactyl Maine Coon is a Maine Coon born with extra toes on one or more paws. This natural genetic trait has been associated with the breed for centuries and was particularly common among the original Maine Coons found in the northeastern United States.

Many people are surprised to learn that polydactyl cats are not the result of crossbreeding or genetic modification. They are purebred Maine Coons that carry a naturally occurring trait passed down through generations.

Polydactyl Maine Coons are known for their distinctive oversized paws, often described as “snowshoe feet” or “mitten paws.” Aside from having extra toes, they are no different from other Maine Coons in terms of personality, health, or temperament.

Are Polydactyl Maine Coons Rare?

While not every Maine Coon kitten is born polydactyl, the trait remains highly sought after by many Maine Coon enthusiasts. Historically, polydactyl cats were especially valued by sailors and farmers because their large, extra-toed paws provided additional stability and traction.

Today, polydactyl Maine Coons are admired for their unique appearance and their connection to the breed’s early history. Because the trait is naturally inherited, availability can vary from one litter to another.
